When it comes to breast augmentation, there are many decisions to be made. Between size, material, shape, texture, projection, incision location, and more, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. When women visit our practice for breast augmentation from across the Atlanta area, our goal is to make sure they feel supported and informed about every aspect of their decision.
In this blog post, we’ll look at 2 major implant considerations—material and size—to help you better understand the exciting options available to you.
Implant Material
When it comes to implant material or composition, there are 2 FDA-approved options to choose from: silicone and saline. Both implant types have a track record of creating safe and effective results, but they each offer specific benefits.
Saline: These implants consist of a silicone shell filled with sterile saltwater (saline). If the implant ruptures, this saline is safely absorbed by the body, and you’ll be able to see the difference in size directly These tend to be the more cost-effective option. Saline implants are FDA-approved for individuals 18 and older, or any age when used in reconstruction.
Silicone: These implants are composed of a silicone casing filled with silicone gel. Ruptures in these implants often go unnoticed since the silicone tends to hold its shape. While these implants are priced somewhat higher, they tend to feel more like natural breast tissue. Silicone implants are FDA-approved for individuals 22 and older, or any age when used in reconstruction.
Implant Size
Size is another consideration that can cause some stress for women pursuing augmentation. You may have started researching size options based on celebrity comparisons or recommendations from loved ones and previous patients. This a great first step. However, it’s important to keep an open mind when it comes to implant size as this is a highly personal decision. A size that looks attractive on another person may not be the best choice for your body type or lifestyle.
Our goal with augmentation is to create results that are proportional to each woman’s body. Our team of board-certified plastic surgeons has decades of experience working with women to select the implant size that makes them feel most confident. Learn more about what goes into that process in this blog post.
The best way to determine the right size for you is to meet with your surgeon for a private, personal consultation. During this appointment, we’ll discuss your goals and concerns while closely assessing your body proportions, lifestyle, and other factors to determine your ideal implant.
